Dr Copeland is a psychiatrist. This is an individual who is a physician who specializes in psychiatry and is certified in treating mental disorders.[1] All psychiatrists are trained in diagnostic evaluation and in psychotherapy. As part of their evaluation of the patient, psychiatrists are one of the few mental health professionals who may prescribe psychiatric medication, conduct physical examinations, order and interpret laboratory tests and electroencephalograms, and may order brain imaging studies such as computed tomography or computed axial tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography scanning.
Practice
He uses a knowledge of biological, psychological, and social factors in working with patients. Initially, a comprehensive diagnostic examination is performed to evaluate the current problem with attention to its physical, genetic, developmental, emotional, cognitive, educational, family, peer, and social components. He arrives at a diagnosis and diagnostic formulation which are shared with the patient and, if appropriate, family . He then designs a treatment plan which considers all the components and discusses these recommendations with the patient. His treatment plan is comprehensive and may include recommendations for medication, psychotherapy, cognitive- behavioral therapy, insight oriented therapy, marital counseling, or whatever else is necessary for resolution of the patients conflict and lead to a more robust and balanced integrated sense o;f self. Dr. Copeland is aware of the value of some of the CAM(complementary alternative medicine) practices such as yoga and mindfulness and offers classes in these practices in combination with the other therapies offered at the clinic. Dr Copeland has a psychiatric general practice which means he can diagnose and treat all major psychiatric problems. These include but are not limited to Depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, ADHD, thought disorders such as schizophrenia and schizo affective disorder, Bipolar Disorder, personality disorders, phase of live problems, relational problems, marital discord, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and the dually diagnosed individual with both a psychiatric problem complicated by substance abuse.
Dr. Copeland has been practicing in the Sacramento Valley for over 20 years and works collaboratively with many agencies. Some of these include Alta California Regional Center, Elk Grove and San Juan School Districts, many non public agencies including Point Quest, The Williams Academy, Rancho and Placer Learning Centers, Breaking The Cycle, Atkinson Youth Services, and others. He believes in comprehensive treatment including all agencies and professionals involved in a child’s care and the immense value of CONTINUITY OF CARE and COLLABORATION WITH FELLOW PROFESSIONALS in his patients.
