“… the best in getting my child the help that was needed …”
Dr. Copeland has been seeing my son for over five years. He has seen him at his worst and now at his best time. Dr. Copeland has become like a best friend to my family and me. He is so easy to talk to, and he listens to our concerns regarding the care for my son. My child was placed in a private school due to his actions at school — hurting himself and others. After being under Dr. Copeland’s care, he is no longer harming himself or others, and has returned to a regular school. Dr. Copeland has been the best in getting my child the help that was needed, not only with his medication but also with in-house services that would help my son maintain the goals that we have set. Dr. Copeland is truly the best.

“… a lot of adult women may not realize that ADHD may be affecting them …”
I am a professional adult woman who has functioned well, but managing it all required much greater effort than ordinarily would be required because I let my ADHD go undiagnosed and untreated. When I finally decided to deal with my struggles to remain focused, to get through tasks without breaks and to avoid interrupting people, I went to Dr. Copeland. Shenavian was welcoming and professional, and Dr. Copeland offered a thorough assessment of my history and current situation. I worked closely with him to find the right medication for me, and he was available and responsive to my calls and requests for appointments. Having the right medication did not change me from a wreck to a rocket scientist because I was not coming in with severe problems, but it has made my work life easier and enabled me to become more organized. My family has noticed a difference in me as well. I think that other doctors may not appreciate the needs of a functioning professional who appears to have it all together, but Dr. Copeland can understand that some people must work really hard to make all the right things happen, and doing so comes at a cost to the individual. I think that a lot of adult women may not realize that ADHD may be affecting them, and may not even know the symptoms in adulthood. I hope that any woman who is thinking about working with a psychiatrist takes the step to do so, and I can highly recommend Dr. Copeland for his professionalism, understanding and compassion.

“… soon, I began to feel like myself again …”
For years I struggled with feeling overwhelmed, which would often lead to anxiety and exhaustion. Fortunately, I was referred to Dr. Paul Copeland. After his careful listening he was able to recommend a treatment plan. He monitored my progress and was available to address any and all of my concerns. Soon, I began to feel like myself again. My organizational skills returned and tasks that at times seemed insurmountable became manageable. What a gift. I highly recommend Dr. Copeland.

“… our son finally has the support to help him succeed …”
We entered Dr. Copeland’s office at an extremely difficult time. We were desperate, barely surviving day by day, hour by hour. Immediately, Dr.Copeland tenaciously worked to find the appropriate medication for our son. Medication management took a significant amount of time, but he did not stop there. Dr. Copeland made a school psychologist available for consultation and arranged for us to work directly with Brenda Terzich-Garland, BCBA, an accomplished and well-recognized behaviorist. Ms. Terzich-Garland had the experience and expertise to quickly identify our son’s needs and develop a behavioral plan and functional skills program that has resulted in steady improvement for him over the last year and one-half. At 10, our son finally has the appropriate support to help him succeed. It is no exaggeration when I say that Ms Terzich-Garland’s behavioral expertise in combination with Dr. Copeland’s pharmaceutical expertise literally saved our son and as a result, our family.

Caring for our son’s needs was enough, but as the mom, I place great value on the incredible respect Dr. Copeland demonstrates to me with every contact. During each visit Dr. Copeland communicates his support and recognition of each and every effort I have made on our son’s behalf. This is greatly appreciated, but what impressed me the most was the morning a student was present at our appointment. With my permission Dr. Copeland gave the student a brief history of our son’s diagnosis, and treatment. Then, he clearly and compassionately described the challenges our son’s special needs created from my perspective. I had not expressed my personal challenges and emotions throughout this long journey, but he had the insight and empathy to perceive the experience of a mother of a severely disabled child. In my experience this ability is rare.

I know the future will hold many challenges, but I now face it with hope knowing our son has a team of experts that are capable of supporting his unique needs so that he can reach his full potential.

“… a true savior in our lives …”
My child started seeing Dr. Copeland shortly after his fourth birthday (2004). His behavior was out of control; he had been kicked out of three daycares and was unable to sustain his behavior to attend pre-school. My son was referred to Dr. Copeland by a counselor who thought that maybe medication would work for him. I was really leery of putting him on medication, and I expressed this to the doctor. Dr. Copeland took the time to thoroughly explain to me the benefits and side effects that my son taking medication would have on our lives. He made sure I was completely comfortable with choices made as a parent, in my son’s treatment.

There are no words to explain the improvement this decision has made in our lives. Dr. Copeland has been a true savior in our lives. I can now sit and read to my child, he has started to interact with his peers, and he can actually focus in class! His violent outbursts are now few and far in between. Recently he has begun to “come out of his shell” (direct quote from his teacher). He has returned to daycare, where he has been for the past two years. My son is now 7 years old and doing well. Who knows where we would be at this point without the help, support and guidance that we received from Dr. Copeland? I can honestly say that starting treatment with Dr. Copeland was a major turning point in our lives.

“… empathy, acceptance, warmth and respect …”
I have known Dr. Copeland as a caring professional for many years. He has helped many patients in the Northern California area — patients who continue to ask for him and for his help over and over. What impresses me the most about working with Dr. Copeland is his vast wealth of knowledge. Dr. Copeland’s patients who were referred to him greatly benefit from the education and knowledge they receive, and also from the care and support that they are getting. After months and sometimes years of ineffective treatment [by others], Dr. Copeland has been able to pinpoint problems that have arisen and bring much appreciated relief to his patients.

I highly recommend Dr. Copeland; he is a unique and important medical provider in his field. Dr. Copeland and his caring staff are told they offer empathy, acceptance, warmth and respect. Patients who want to seek respect, time to be heard, care and honesty have found it with this clinic.

“… ‘thank you’ isn’t enough for giving our son and our family a life…”
Can a “thank you” be enough? What do you say to the person who changes your child’s life? My child was diagnosed with a behavioral disorder that is labeled debilitating and life-altering. A distant stare was often seen in the eyes of my son, but due to the hard work and dedication of professionals like Dr. Paul Copeland my son has been given the chance to LIVE life and be a part of each day, not just a permanent fixture of expected inconvenience. The knowledge that professionals like Dr. Copeland have is vast and comes with a great amount of responsibility. The challenges that my son faced before falling into his care were almost insurmountable. He was unable to sit for any length of time, focus on any one topic, or understand other people’s pain or joy. This hindered his ability to learn, care or reach his true human potential. The anxiety my little boy had to overcome to just sit through a math lesson was painful to watch, and even more agonizing was seeing his awkward social interactions damage his self-worth more with each passing day.

Then Dr. Copeland entered our lives. His knowledge of people combined with his expertise in prescribing just the right medication not only changed my son’s life but our family’s life as well. The debilitating and life-altering diagnosis has been replaced with promise and hope for a little boy who now shows empathy, compassion and has become the better part of our lives. “Thank you” is never enough for giving our son and our family a LIFE, but it is going to have to do, for now.
