Shenavian Williams Rebecca Sturges, M.S., N.C.C
Rebecca is delighted to join Healing Pathways as a Marriage and Family Counseling intern. Rebecca prides herself on her ability to establish a warm, safe, comfortable and productive counseling relationship with all her clients – regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious background. Rebecca believes that change is always possible and enjoys working closely with clients to help them find and embark on their own “ Healing Pathway” towards whichever goal(s) they desire. The following are areas of counseling specialization Rebecca feels are her strengths:

Weight loss and diet management:
With over 20 years experience in the health and fitness field, Rebecca has seen the toll that being over weight can take on one’ s health, lifestyle and self-esteem. Using Cognitive-Behavioral therapy principles (“ What you think effects what you feel and do” ) coupled with warm acceptance, Rebecca focuses on offering personalized tools and support to help clients succeed in achieving long-term weight loss goals, even for those who have struggled and given up in the past.

ADD/ADHD treatment:
As a counselor intern working in the San Juan Unified School District, Rebecca has worked with many students struggling with the organizational, discipline and interpersonal problems that can result from ADHD. As a parent herself, Rebecca knows first hand the stress and frustration parents face in dealing with ADD/ADHD problem behaviors at home and school. Most importantly, Rebecca has care and concern for the spirit and self-esteem of kids who get an ADD/ADHD diagnosis. They – and ADHD in general – are often misunderstood and handled inappropriately. The good news is that with the right treatment, counseling and support ADD/ADHD kids can do just fine!

Couples counseling:
Regardless whether the issue is constant conflict or total disconnect, Rebecca thoroughly enjoys helping couples discover/reclaim safety, support, communication and closeness in their relationship. Having been married for a while,Rebecca knows that sometimes our closest relationships can be the most challenging and problematic (!), but believes that with relationship counseling couples can come to understand themselves, their partner and their conflicts in a way that can ultimately help the relationship not just survive, but thrive.

Adolescent girls:
Rebecca finds it easy to connect to girls of all ages, even those “ difficult teens” . Many teens walk into a counseling situation suspicious and uneasy, but Rebecca has found that with honesty, acceptance, understanding and humor she is able to build trust and a good working relationship with both teenagers and their (sometimes) beleaguered parents.

Depression/Anxiety:
Rebecca has a lot of empathy for those going through life sad, discouraged, stressed and/or worried. Pragmatic and results-oriented, Rebecca has found cognitive-behavioral and strength-based counseling interventions to be helpful on their own, as well as strong adjuncts to psychopharmacological prescriptions.

In her personal life Rebecca enjoys travel/different cultures, movies, reading, music, hiking, dancing, cooking, wine, people and keeping her sense of humor.
